Do you know yours? Do you know what’s important and what’s not? Do you why you spend the time you devote to what you spend it on?

Most people I work with will tell me they know their priorities and they keep the right ones in the right spots.

It’s not what I see though. I hear all the “God, Marriage, Family, Work” mantra, but I RARELY see anyone live that way in day to day life.

We just don’t typically live that way today. What I most often see is something more like: “Work, Netflix, Social Media, Play, Family, Marriage, a lot of other stuff, God.”

So entirely backward. So perfectly normal. So entirely American.

Why is it so hard for us to get our heads on straight, and LIVE the way we say we want to?

I think the irony is we don’t make our priorities a priority.

We just don’t. Instead, we drift, we coast through life, trying our best to deal with it as it comes at us 100 miles an hour. It’s tough, life’s tough, and it’s hard enough to keep our heads above water as it is. The rent, the bills, the job, the needs of everyone around me. No wonder people just want to come home and escape into that episode of Game of Thrones.

Beat of from the day and the world around us, not really wanting to think about the reality of the most important stuff always being pushed to the bottom by the nasty urgent stuff.

It’s frustrating, it’s guilt inducing, but it’s truth.

It’s the truth we need to admit. It’s the truth we need to take head on and deal with and admit to ourselves that we need to do a heck of a lot better job “prioritizing our priorities.”

If you don’t, you're gonna look back at your long life one day and realize that you spent all the time you had doing the stuff you actually didn’t care that much about.

We all only get one shot here on this earth, try and live each day like it mattered, like it was your last, like you meant what you said when you were asked what your priorities really were, when you were questions about what matters most to you.

Live it, live “them.”
